Sony Headphones Review - The Best Noise Cancelling Headphones

The fifth generation model of Sony's noise-cancelling headphones look a little different from the previous model but they sound as good. The headphones are lightweight, comfortable, and come with a variety of features such as Quick Attention mode and Speak-to-Chat. They also feature wear detection, and AI-powered DSEE Extreme upscaling audio.

The ANC is extremely powerful and reduces train noise to a low rumble. The option to pass through lets you hear outside sounds, if you need.

1. Sony WH-1000XM5

Sony headphones are among the top when it comes noise cancellation. The fifth generation of WH1000XM5s is no exception. They offer one of the best noise cancelling experiences we've ever had. When you put on your headphones and enable noise cancellation, you're walking into a cone of silence. Engine noises and HVAC systems, squeaking metal, and even conversations with neighbors are all muted.

The XM5s also excel on the audio aspect. Their large soundstage lets every element of a song to shine and breathe. For instance, on the track by Billie Eilish called Bad Guy, the drums pound with a satisfying power and weight as the high-pitched vocals blend into the mix.

The XM5s are also notable because of their smart interaction with your smartphone. They can sense when they are being removed from the head and stop the music. They can also note that you are driving on a noisy highway and automatically reduce the noise cancellation level.

The WH-1000XM5s are also very green. They are made of recycled plastic and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and the headband being made of premium fabric. They include a collapsible case that can be folded into itself, creating the compact pouch. Also included is an 3.5mm to 3.5mm aux cable so that you can listen in a passive mode. The ear cups can be removed for simple cleaning. Additionally, the XM5s run on rechargeable batteries that can provide up to 20 hours of playtime on a full charge. Additionally, they're equipped with an adaptive speed charging system that charges twice the speed of traditional USB headphones.

2. Bose QuietComfort 35

The Bose QuietComfort 35/QC35 II Wireless 2018 are more flexible than the Audio-Technica's ATH-DSR9BT Wireless headphones thanks to their incredibly comfortable fit, a well-balanced sound profile and ANC feature that blocks a large amount of background noise cancelling headphones with mic. The Bose headphones have 20 hours of battery life, and are easier to charge, and can be used with a smartphone when the battery is out. This makes them an ideal choice for those looking for headphones that can be used as commuter or as travel headphones.

These premium Bose headphones have a dedicated button that turns on Google Assistant, which will play music, answer trivia questions, and even read your phone notifications. They have outstanding noise cancellation capabilities, and although they are getting a bit long by 2020 standards (and have successors in their line of siblings, the QC35) however, you can still get great deals on the headphones.

As with other Bose ANC headphones, the QC35s do an excellent job in reducing ambient noise, and their noise reduction technology has advanced over time. They're not the most effective ANC headphone available particularly when compared to newer competitors. Audiophiles should look elsewhere for better audio quality.

The QC35s also have the ability to connect to two devices simultaneously and "audio share" with a person. This is a great option if you'd like to listen to music while talking to another person. They're also a popular option for frequent travelers, and they sport that classic Bose appearance that a lot of people enjoy. SlickWraps or Skin Sticker covers with decals are available for purchase at a reasonable price when you wish to personalize your QC35s.

3. Sony WH-1000XM4

Sony's WH1000XM4s offer nothing in terms of aesthetic or comfort improvements in comparison to the M3s, but its noise cancellation is an entirely new beast. The company has replaced the old system-on chip (SoC) with a new one that it claims will allow it to detect and respond more precisely to the ambient sound in real time while reducing mid- and high-frequency noises thanks to its Dual Noise sensor technology.

Two feedforward microphones inside each earcup record ambient sound. The sound is processed by QN1 noise cancelling processor to cut it down quickly without affecting the quality of your audio. The result is a level of noise reduction that is comparable to the best headphones at this price point.

There's a sensitivity dial which allows you to alter the noise cancellation to meet your needs. If you're out in public for instance you may want some ambient sound to be filtered through and at home, you'll want a more private listening experience. This feature also uses geo-location access to automatically select the appropriate setting based on where you're headed.

The WH-1000XM4s can be used for hands-free calls and have a whopping 30 hours of battery life, along with quick charging capabilities. They also boast a robust Bluetooth 5.0 connection with support for multipoint and NFC. In my testing, I found that an instant Remastering of Paul McCartney's Flaming pie was dynamic and clear, while rough mixes and home recordings also sounded crisp.

4. Sony WH-CH720N

The Sony WH-CH720N headphones are a great option if you're looking to buy headphones that offer excellent active noise cancellation at affordable prices. The 710N Wireless is a step up over its predecessor and offers improved ANC performance, and superior audio quality. They also come with a lighter design and up to 35 hours of battery life.

These headphones aren't the Best over ear headphones noise cancelling over the ear headphones noise cancelling; Find Out More, suitable for those who want flagship features like LDAC Bluetooth and Smart Listening which incorporates voice assistants. They don't come with a carry case, auto-pause feature, or earcups that fold up and are therefore difficult to take on a trip with.

The build quality of the WH-CH720N is decent but not as good as the 1000XM5. The headband and earcups made of plastic. They are light and comfortable for long periods of time however, they aren't built to withstand heavy use or a few falls on hard surfaces. The design is a bit heavy, and the earcups squeak when you move them. The controls are easy to use, however, with tactile buttons that give an excellent click-based feedback. The ANC can be switched on and off by pressing the power switch. Pressing and holding the button activates Sony's Adaptive audio Control. This feature allows you select the appropriate profile based on your location or the way you use the headphones.

The WH-CH720N wireless noise cancellation headphones are one of the cheapest on the market. You get great ANC for the price, a lightweight design and up to 35-hour battery life. These headphones are worth a look for if you frequently commute.

5. Earfun Air Pro

The Air Pro is no different. Earfun headsets and earbuds are well-known for their excellent value. They're great for music and calls, and their ANC technology blocks out a significant amount of noise without making your ears feel uncomfortable. These headphones also have many features that are available in headphones that cost up to twice as much.

The earbuds are characterized by an over-emphasized bass range which adds rumble and punch to most tracks, while keeping lead vocals and instruments bright and present. This makes them suitable for a wide range of music, even though they might sound a bit too loud for certain. They have a very consistent frequency response, best over The ear headphones noise cancelling so they sound the same no matter what you are listening to.

We played Missy Elliott's Get Ur Freak On, and the earbuds did a fantastic job of showcasing the song's bass-heavy intro with fervor and enthusiasm. Stormzy's Vossi Bop had a similar fluid sound, with the treble highlighting the vocals and percussion.

On the phone, the voice quality is very good even in noisy environments. The earbuds are equipped with the most recent Qualcomm chip, which ensures that background noises, clicks, and other distractions are kept to bay. This is the case even when talking next to London Underground during rush hour.

The earbuds' Bluetooth connectivity is also very good and there were no issues during our tests. They pair and connect quickly, with minimal latency with iOS and Android devices. They're also IPX5 water-resistant, so they're fine for rain and workouts - although you shouldn't submerge them in water. They come with an enclosure that can hold two quarters and two quarters of charges. This is perfect for traveling.
