Door Handle Replacement

It's worth replacing door handles if you aren't happy with the way they look or if they are difficult to use. With some patience, you can install an entirely new handle in a short time.

Modern door handles are typically equipped with cover plates which hide the screws, giving them an attractive look. However, you'll have to attach them separately if your new handle does not have them attached already.

Removing the old Handle

The door handle isn't only a decoration for your home It's also a safety feature that allows you to lock and unlock your door. As time passes, the door handle may start to lose its grip or feel loose. It may also begin to look old and worn. This is a sign that it's probably time to replace window handle it.

One of the first signs that your door handle needs replacing is if it's becoming difficult to operate. This is a serious problem since you won't be able to lock or unlock the door which could put your family and yourself at risk.

Another reason to replace your door handle is when it's damaged or broken. A damaged or broken door handle is risky, particularly for children and elderly family members who might struggle to open it. They could be trapped. Luckily, it's quite simple to fix a damaged door handle by simply replacing the old one.

The majority of modern door handles are standard size, so they are suitable for any door. If you are not certain that your new door handle will work, remove the old one and measure its housing holes. This will allow you to buy the right size door handle.

It is the easiest method to remove the door handle by unscrewing it from the door. This is typically done with a screw driver. However certain patio door handle locks handles come with an outer cover plate that hides the mounting screws, so you'll need to pry off this cover plate to get access to the screws beneath. After you've removed the old handle, take note of the way the spindle is connected to ensure you are able to align it when you fit your new one.

You can also remove the door handle by unscrewing the latch mechanism. This is typically done with the screwdriver, but you'll need to locate the small latch, which should be just to the left of the trim piece. After you have removed the latch, take the locking window handle off the strike plate, and then remove the latch off the door's edge.

The Strike Plate

If you are replacing the handle, you'll want to replace the latch plate, which holds the hole that the door's latch is inserted into when it closes. The new handles will come with two latch plates that are circular and rectangular plate (see the image above which shows the various parts of the door handle). If you have an rectangular latch plate, swap it with a circular one. This will allow the latch to be able to hook onto the strike plate, making the handle more convenient.

The first step is to unscrew the screw that's holding the old latch plate in place. The screws are typically tight and require a lot of force to loosen them. If you can, it might be beneficial to have a second person help with this process.

The latch plate should easily lift itself out of the door once the screws have been removed. If the latch plate is stuck or refuses to move, use a small hammer to scrape the edges. This will sometimes free the plate up.

Now you can prepare the new strike plate for installation. Install the latch plate in the bifold door handles jamb using the screws that came with your new handles. Be careful not to tighten too much the screws, as this could damage the strike plate.

If you're unsure whether the latch plate is in the correct position, shut and then open the door to see if it latches and closes correctly. If it does not, you will need to adjust the strikeplate either up or down, forward or back until the door closes correctly.

If the door continues to move or jiggles, then you may have to enlarge your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more frequent on older doors. It can be caused by wear and tear hinges that are too narrow, the wrong size latch, or a damaged strike plate. If this is the case then you should use a filing made of metal instead of a chisel or hammer to adjust the strike plate.

Take off the Latch

The latch is a curved metal piece that slides into and out of a hole on the inside of your door. When you turn the handle, it pushes this latch forward and allows you to open the door. It also hooks into an opening in the door frame to keep the door shut. If your door wobbles when you close, replacing the latch could be the only thing needed to fix the issue.

It's difficult to see the screws that attach the latch to the door, but there's usually a small slot on the trim plate that allows you to insert a screwdriver into the slot and pry it off. After removal types of window handles the trim plate you should be able to remove the latch, as well as the bolts that hold it in place and the spindle.

If the latch cannot be easily removed, use a paperclip or tool to remove it from the handle mechanism. Place the item into the slot for the latch that is recessed, and gently twist it or jiggle until you feel the handle and latch begin to split. It may take this several times before the latch is loose enough to let it out.

You should be able slide the new latch into its slot without issues after you've removed the old one. Make sure that the latch is positioned correctly in the slot and aligned with the screw chambers, and then use the new screws to attach it to the strike plate and door frame.

Before installing the new handle, make sure to measure your current backset (the distance from the center of the big hole on the front of the door to the edge). Also, make sure that the latch size on the new handle matches the measurement of your existing handle.

If you are replacing the latch or handle or handle, or if the old lock cylinder is damaged, then you'll require a new one. Remove the cover plate
