How to Replace an audi key shell G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 via the grey wire. The ECU uses this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can activate spark and injectors accordingly.
If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of a chain stretch or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).
It is a little tricky to test since there are several pins on the connector, and each has its own functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is operational, it should be reading around 1000 ohms. Check replacement key for audi signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this part.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll i had a big cut in power like the engine is running out of gas or injectors are not firing any more. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was unclean. When i crank the engine with no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th stays shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ i get zero Ohm. I think the issue is elsewhere.
I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.
I'm not certain what to do, i think i've pretty much ruled out everything else. However, i'm afraid that i might have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 and both function in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or at a parts store. It is easy to test them - just put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They must be infinite ohms.

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions about timing of the fuel injector, for example. To do this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you are experiencing issues with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could cause the engine shutting down.
Some of the signs of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev counter and gears that shift faster than normal and/or audi etron key q3 key [Morphomics.science] misfiring when you are in gear. If you have any of these issues, it is likely that your sensor is deteriorating and needs replacing. They are cheap and easy-to-find especially in the case of a Bosch sensor like ours.
